We understand that creating a Will is one of the most important decisions you will make and before choosing William you may have a whole bunch of questions. We have answered some of the most common questions about our business below. If you have any other questions then please feel free to get in touch.
Why did you create William?
Over 50% of people in the UK die without a Will and this can have serious implications for their family. We created William to make it is as easy as possible to create a Will and reduce the number of people who have to cope with this scenario.
A Will with William is of the same high quality that you would receive with a solicitor, but is also convenient, straight-forward and affordable.
You can read more about why we created William on the Our Story page.
What experience do you have?
William was created by a team of legal and technology experts:

What about security?
Security is really important to us. We know you are trusting us with your personal information. We use SSL encryption on the website to encrypt your data as it passes to our database. We also encrypt the database itself so you can rest assured that your information is always secure.
What about privacy?
Your privacy is really important to us too. We know your information is private and we do not share any of it with any third parties.
Should I use a solicitor?
That’s really down to personal choice. An online Will is not the same as working with a lawyer or specialist Will writer. They are able to talk through specific things which are important to you and provide guidance. Also, if you own a business, own property abroad or have significant assets then an online solution probably isn’t right for you.
We created William because solicitors are expensive and inconvenient for many people, and can therefore be a barrier to completing a Will. We also wanted to create something which made it easy for people to update their Will, in-keeping with changes in their lives.
What other online solutions are there?
We spent a long time looking at what other online solutions are available and didn’t find them to be user friendly. We felt that they were confusing and full of unnecessary legal jargon.
We also discovered some of the online solutions had hidden costs and policies which we believe to be unethical. The most concerning being that some websites charge a low fee for the writing of the Will but then appoint themselves as the executor, at a percentage fee, significantly higher than the market rate.
The executor is the person or company who ensures that the instructions within your Will are followed. In the terms and conditions of one company, we found that they charge a flat 4% of the estate value. With an estate of £500,000 they would be charging £20,000 to be the executor. This is significantly higher than the market rate and will therefore reduce the size of the inheritance your loved ones will receive.
What if I'm not happy with my Will?
We provide a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee with William.
If you are not entirely happy with your will, we will refund your cost.
We are always looking to improve our product, as such, if you are unhappy we want to hear why.
What if you go out of business?
We are privately funded and liquid. We currently have no investors or debt. We have reserved funds in place for if the business has to close which can’t be used to fund business operations. If for any reason we choose to close down the business then these funds are released and allow us to close the business down while protecting customers. As such:
- You will be given time to download the electronic copy of your will
- If you take out storage with us we will refund any outstanding storage costs (we keep all storage costs in reserve)
- We will send back any stored wills via recorded delivery
We want William to help others. We will therefore be giving £5 for every will completed on William to Action for Children which helps disadvantaged children across the UK.
